Peppermint Friday Review #32: Imperium

This week's been weird I haven't watched that many films, but I have watched alot of TV as I've really gotten into that recently. But I watched this film last night and I just need to talk about it, Its one of those films. Its called Imperium and its got Daniel Radcliffe and Toni Collette and its about an FBI agent who goes undercover in a white supremacist group. 

The reason I watched this film was not because I love Daniel Radcliffe and I think he's a great actor, but the story is intriguing to me. Now before people go crazy at me and say 'Oh you're a racist how could you be interested in that?' I'm not interested where I wanna join cus I don't believe at all, but I'm interested in the sense of 'why do they believe that?' 'what makes them think that way?' kinda interested. I loved this film I don't think I've seen a film quite like it before, and that's great because I love individuality in a script and a concept of a story.

Daniel Radcliffe's character Nate Foster is a very nice, friendly, threatening and basically Switzerland and he had to evolve into a completely different person to who he was before. His head is shaved he's got a tattoo and shouting racist remarks and just is total opposite to what he was at the start of the film. But he still remains very friendly, and easy to get on with kinda person, Nate has to find someway to relate to these people, and understand why they do what they do. His ultimate main goal is to get to Dallas Wolf who is this radio talk show host, as he is a prime suspect to an attack somewhere. 

The community the group developed seemed very nice and friendly, like Nate and the people he was with went to BBQs. There were kids there and families and very friendly and opening place. Although this is fiction, so some truths are stretched slightly, but I found that interesting and really fascinating to watch as I didn't think it would be like that, I thought it would be very much like an American version of This is England, and it is but its not entirely there are some very nice and sweet characters like Gerry who is a happily married man with kids and at the end you feel guilty because you relate to Gerry and he seems like such a genuine guy and it does bode the question should you be friends with someone who believes in something quite controversial?

It did disappoint me slightly as I was expecting it to be really good and eyeopening, and I was interested and really liked it and I'm not sure what I was expecting but I just thought it would be really controversial and off the cuff story I've never seen before. Also I kinda wanted to see it from the White Supremacy perspective, because noone's agreeing with them, well I'm not I just wanna know why and get an intelligent response not just 'oh because'. But I really liked it, I guess my expectations were high, but I did enjoy it and everyone was really good. I especially liked Johnny he is a teenager who believes everything the White Supremacy believes in and in the end he is a changed man his attitude has changed and no longer believes in it. So I like that it has those characters that see change as a fresh start and leaving your former beliefs isn't a bad thing at all just a start to a new life. 

I love films like this, and what I mean by that is I like watching things that I can't relate to at all, I watch them because I'm fascinated and wanna see if I can relate to them in some way, because its such an opposite thing its brilliant and I find it intriguing. I love where its set aswell, its filmed in Richmond, Virgina and it just looks very nice and chill. You usually see films that are filmed in America that are set in New York and Los Angles, so its refreshing to be set in Virgina. Overall its a very good film, I'm so glad I watched it because there are characters who are brilliant, like Johnny, Gerry and Nate who are all brilliantly written, This post might seem controversial, as this film is controversial but I wanted to talk about it because its unique. So if you're like me and fascinated by this then watch it, if not that's fine too. 

Review: Suicide Squad

I watched this film, like everyone else when it came out and it was just opinions everywhere. But I didn't have this blog back then, so I missed out but I have opinions of this film.

Unless you've been in living in a cave for the past year, you will know about this film. What it is, is DC Villians battling one massive Villian, that is the dummy version breakdown of the film. It was based like many Heroes and Villians of a Comic Book series, there was a series called Suicide Squad which only had Deadshot and The Enchantress in, not Harley Quinn, the Joker and just everyone else in the film. Overall this film is based of DC Villians, battling off a big Villian. 

I liked this film, I did enjoy it I can understand why people hate it as it is abit wishy washy in terms of what they were getting at, and it did feel like they were just trying to make another version of Guardians of The Galaxy but with Villians. I enjoyed the whole Villians bounding together and just creating mayhem, we also saw Harley Quinn for the first again in years, I mean I know this is the reason they made this film because they wanted Harley back, and Margot Robbie is fantastic. Jared Leto as the new Joker will be brilliant and alot of people were annoyed at the fact that Jared's Joker wasn't really shown, which is sad I know, I hated it aswell, but I reckon this won't be the last we see of this Joker. I bet you he will get his own film, there was a clip of his jail cell that just had a baby clothes surrounding him, it was just brilliant. The look of the new modern Joker, honestly I'm so excited for the Jared Leto and all that jazz. 

                                   

The chemistry between the Joker and Harley Quinn is incredible and much needed, we haven't seen Harley in a while so its nice. Theres a bit where the Joker and her are talking, and he goes 'would you die for me?' she obviously replies with 'yes' and then he goes 'no would you live for me?' its that toxic relationship, that made sense but didn't. It was only between these two individuals, that is just so wonderfully written. We also saw the beginning of there relationship and the psychotic beginning of Harley Quinn, and her just being this nurse trying to help the Joker, and thinking she was but she under his spell, and fell for him hook line and sinker.

What I love about this film is the female characters who were these very intelligent with very careers, and then they either met men, or just something happen to them to make them the way they are, not that its a bad thing in the story/creative world thingy. But I do find that funny that all the women in this film are intelligent. Will Smith is brilliant, loved the humanity part of Deadshot that he was this Villian but he also had his daughter that held a place with him.

The music was good, but again it felt abit like they were trying to make another Guardians of the Galaxy, the dialouge was abit there at time, but when it was good, it was good. Watch this film because you will enjoy it, but in terms of being a good Comic Book, Super Villian film it wasn't that great, I enjoyed watching it, and I'm glad I watched it. The best way to some up this review is, its like seeing the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, I'm glad I went to see the Mona Lisa, but I don't think I'd go again.  Although I am glad they made it, because it bought back Harley, and Villians and just Characters in the DC Universe, that I never knew about. 

Remakes, Sequels and Reboots.

Haven't really watched that many films this week, which is fine just had abit of a break from film watching. I thought I'd do a post of what I think of Remakes, Sequels and Reboots, as thats a big thing in the film world right now. As with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is out and thats a Harry Potter Sequel(ish), its from the same world. And Beauty and the Beast trailer is out, I thought why not, and also I'll be talking about loads of films in this. 

Where to begin? wow, Remakes are good but at the same time I don't like them. I can understand why you would remake a film, whether it be the original film wasn't good enough, or its such a classic tale you wanna recreate it again for a new audience. It also has an audience, so it doesn't need to be that hard to make as theres so much material to work from. But again this is just me, some people could be different, but I think you should try to find out new stories, whether it be from your parents, grandparents or friends, its stories that are new to you, and it could 1 year old, or 100 years old. That way you find that story and its not a remake its new to you and original, if that makes sense. 

Reboots are basically the same thing but different, and the difference could anything from the characters or a different time place, or country even. A good example of that is Ghostbusters the new one of course, and I really hate this particularly as its getting a classic film, and what they decided to do is take the original characters from the 80s, and 30 years later they have grown up children that are girls.

The problem I have with this is that, they're trying to make women funny, and strong again. I have no problem with funny, strong women I think they're great positive role models for girls, and just everyone. But its like saying 'oh James Bond can be a female, lets make her a female get Jennifer Lawrence' yes you can make James Bond a female, by all means do so but that doesn't mean she should be. It just feels like at the moment the feminist movement its kinda made everyone crazy with the idea that everything should have strong females in, and thats great. I just don't like getting a timeless, classic like the Ghostbusters and turning it into something that just seems cheap to me. I dunno am I wrong?

Sequels are just the ongoing from a book or a film to make the story more interesting, and dynamic. Sometimes they have to happen like, Lord Of The Rings, or Harry Potter because they're a book series, and they would make no sense if they did it all in one film. As there are more and more book to film franchises, it kinda started with LOTR, and HP. In some ways I don't like that as it seems like they all have the same storylines, they're all set in the future, theres a strong female character we all love, theres 2 boy characters that we fight over, overall they're all slightly different from each other. I just feel like with Fantastic Beasts, and I'm a huge fan of Harry Potter, and I will be watching this film very soon. I just feel the Harry Potter series was great and we can stop, and let people on the fandoms, and varies writing websites, make up there own thing if that makes sense, fanfiction I mean. I don't hate it that would stupid, but then again I think its great that its set in America, and theres much more stuff to play with in the writing world, and it also makes thing much more exciting for the audience that have watched it for years. 

I do understand why they do it, but that is my opinion you can agree with it or disagree with it its all okay, its the internet its full of opinions. This week was abit weird, but like I said haven't been watching films this week, but have been watching TV, all still stories of course, sometimes its good to be abit different. Also this is the only time I'll talk about Reboots and Sequels, Remakes and all that jazz. But we shall talk this Friday back to films.
