Favourite Comic Book Characters #2

Because of Wonder Woman I'm back to being obsessed with Comic Book characters and all things DC and Marvel, plus most of these characters have their own TV shows. 

Wolverine

We're gonna start with Wolverine, I love him so much as a kid watching X-Men he was just really cool, and mainly the fact that he is this man who isn't like Superman where he wants to take care everyone, but a man who is incredibly flawed and we know he's a hero but the fact that he isn't a happy smiley hero a hero who's created in a lab it gives him an edge. Also the Wolverine that I know and everyone else knows so well is, Hugh Jackman I love what he did with Wolverine he completely reinvented the character and still kept it close to its roots and plus he's played Wolverine for just over 20 years and with his last Wolverine film out earlier this year Logan. I'm gonna miss Hugh Jackman but I'm excited for the next Actor to play Wolverine

Supergirl

Now this girl is so cool, oh god now I didn't really know who Supergirl was until this year and oh god she is amazing. Supergirl has only had one film unlike her cousin who's a man and he's pretty super too, yup its Superman. Honestly right Supergirl is giving him a run for his money, as yes she's only done one film but she hasn't made anything mediocre unlike Superman has, not to say he's a bad superhero its just people should know about his amazing cousin. She has her own TV Show and to be honest with you all if you wanna get to know Supergirl (which you totally should) you need to watch the TV Show as it's got Melissa Benoist in and its totally modernised and amazing. 

The Flash

I loved the Flash in Justice League when I was a kid he was so cheeky and funny particularly to Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl. In the TV Show The Flash, his and Supergirl's world combined and I love it. His character in the TV Show is still funny and witty but theres a real serious side to this man, and similar to Spiderman where he gets power on accident, and has to save Central City. I'm not sure why they got a different actor to play him in the new Justice League film as Grant Gustin who plays him in the TV Show is amazing, and I reckon the fans who watch The Flash might be abit sceptical towards Ezra Miller who's gonna play him, I'm sure he'd do a good job its just why have someone different when theres someone amazing already? you know.

Jessica Jones

This girl oh this girl, she is something Jessica Jones is agent who investigates in aliens and paranormal stuff, she used to be a Superhero but she still counts as this is called 'Favourite Comic Book Characters' but she is so badass. I mainly know about her in the Netflix Show Jessica Jones like most people do, but she is just so cool and Krysten Ritter who plays her is the coolest lady ever, plus Jessica Jones's boyfriend Luke Cage has his own TV Show aswell which I need to watch. Again with Wolverine she is a good guy but doesn't act like it which gives her a real edge and the fact that she doesn't walk around with a costume or looking like mutant, but a badass lady who takes no prisoners, plus she's very sassy and funny.

Peppermint Friday Review #35: Licence To Kill

I get the feeling you guys can get the pattern we've got going, so we started from the 60s, then the 70s and now 80s, so who knows what decade we'll have next hmmmm its the 40s, obviously joking. This bond film is slightly different because the story has much more of a background and its not my favourite but I still love it. 

It stars Timothy Dalton as James Bond and I love his portrayal of Bond being this quite stern man, and not as jokey not to say all of the others loved having a laugh, its just they had abit of sense of humour that was much more louder, whereas his was I guess more British and drier, so I loved that. Its funny because the books are so British and yet this film was written by two Americans and I'm surprised that they got not only the bond feel of the film right, but also the dry, sarcastic humour because not being racist but sometimes when I watch Americans try to do British humour, where we're quite dry and sarcastic its just like 'oh don't do that'. It reminds me of a mum trying to be cool and down with the kids and you're the teenager like 'god mom you're so embarrassing'. It also stars Carey Lowell as Pam Bouvier who is a CIA informant and I don't know why but I just didn't warm to her as much as I did Barbara Bach. 

Loved Sanchez played by Robert Davi and he is fantastic my favourite Bond villain so far, if he and Jaws can team up because that would be the best combination ever. The whole film is set in Florida, and Mexico and it looks beautiful, and I love how 80s the film is. I know that sounds weird but the beginning of the Bond films are always amazing to watch because they represent the film, story and just the whole Bond genre really well. Plus it represents the time really well, the whole 80s feel to it, its just wonderful to watch. 

The costumes to this film are really good, because as well all know I love the 80s, and costumes. I think the reason that may be is because I feel a costume really represents a character, and show their emotions and makes them much more 3D and people who might be real. The one thing that let me down a little bit which is the most important thing was the story wasn't that good. I just didn't feel the story had much charisma to it, I mean it did the job it went from A to B and that's what stories are supposed to but I just didn't like it. For some reason it felt like it was written as a Soap Opera rather than a Bond film. 

It's funny I know because I mentioned I love the humour, and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was and how British it was made out. But getting from A to B on the other hand just felt abit stiff and annoying going from scene to scene. That was the one down side to the film well that and Pam but the story is the most important thing in a film its the bread and butter in a way. Other than that its pretty good, but like I've said before I wouldn't watch a film purely based of the costume or the actors and go away saying its great and I loved it. I feel the actors and costume are just an element to the film, and can make the film from good to amazing. If a story isn't very good then it isn't very good, theres no going back its just that. 

                                                                 
Over all I like this film, but I don't love it and I'm gonna be honest with you guys I hate it when films make me feel like this. With films I wanna either love it and its my new favourite film or I hate it and I can't stand it, and when theres an in between its like 'eh'. Especially when I have to write about it on here, because I hate writing reviews that are just lukewarm. Anyway I liked it but I didn't love it, and there are better Bond films out there I feel anyway. You never know you could be totally lukewarm about a film, and watch it a few years later and finally have an opinion that's not lukewarm.

Review: The Spy Who Loved Me

I think I may have found my new favourite Bond film well so far, its defiantly got one of my favourite songs in it. It's just so good I can't explain it, I just felt that this film had more character to it than Dr No, not to say that was crap just preferred this just that bit more.

It is the basic James Bond plot where he is sent over to Egypt to sort some crap out and meets a girl and well you know how it goes. But its abit different than that, Roger Moore stars as James Bond and I'm not crazy on him, I like him he's a good actor but he wasn't as exciting as Sean Connery was. The Bond girl in the film is such a favourite of mine, Barbara Bach she is just fantastic in this. She plays Anya Amasova or Agent Triple X, so she is on the same level as James Bond and I think that's why I love her so much. The chemistry and combination of James Bond and Anya is just electric, they're the best couple I'd love it if they got they're own franchise. 

The villain in this is Karl Stromberg and he is fantastic, I do prefer his henchman Jaws I love his silent approach to it all, and his teeth freak me out a little bit. I loved the music used in the film and how it was geared more towards it being a Sc-Fi genre than it being just a Drama or something wishy washy. Because James Bond is a genre in itself entirely, the music used especially for the fight scenes was just brilliant. It was more choreographed like a dance rather than it being just two men having a fight, it was much more sophisticated and I prefer fight scenes like that in films in general. 

One scene that didn't have any music was the bit during the end, where Bond is fighting Jaws and theres no music and I just found it funny, and just a must watch. It was so unlike Bond to fight like that it just reminded me of two best mates and they got really drunk and decided to have a fight, but because its Bond and Jaws it was done in a really classy way, so that's what made me laugh. I also liked the fact that Anya had much more substance and has more of a backstory to her, and she's a badass and not afraid of anyone just fearless. Her and Bond had more of a 

The cast of the film seemed much bigger to me, in the space ship thingy there was like atleast 100 people on there and it didn't seem crowded to me it just came together so well. Also the James Bond team is massive aswell, not that that's a bad thing, because again its, its own genre entirely and James Bond is a superhero but with no superpowers. He's so classy. and sophisticated with the villains and people he has a fight with. The film is set in the 70s and you can really tell and I love the 70s particularly when its really embraced, because with Dr No its embraced by the 60s and I just love it so much. 

                                                                  
You should definitely see this film, theres a reason why this film is usually on the top 10 James Bond films lists and stuff. Its a film with so much character and with loads of charisma, I just love it so much. Its a great film if you've watched a few Bond films or not watched any, then this film is brilliant for you as it has everything a bond film needs. Filmmakers Everyone Should Know

I've been wanting to do a post like this for a while now, as I do champion Actors and Actresses in lead of the film. Theres also the brains behind the operation, some of these directors are not just directors they're writers, like the majority are in a way. I got this book for Christmas its called 'A-Z Great Film Directors' and its so aesthetically pleasing and I love how its planned out with the pictures, and the fantastic artwork of the directors, and how cartoony they're drawn. 

 
 
The way they did Spielberg as Indiana Jones is something I love and makes me very happy. If you want to buy a copy of this book I highly recommend you do, one thing that does annoy me slightly about this book, but thats not the author's fault or publishing company's fault its kinda Hollywood's fault that it just so happens that there hardly any female directors in this book, but again thats a different topic altogether, which I will talk about eventually. The directors I will be talking about some are mention in the book, but some aren't so its not entirely based from this book, and there some directors I haven't even heard of until I read this book! Definitely recommend this book!
                                                         
Steven Spielberg

A director who is so awe-inspiring, I mean everyone knows atleast one of his films. I love the fact that he was 27 when he made Jaws a film that became a huge hit amongst everyone, and its so iconic everyone knows the theme music to Jaws. He made E.T which again is such a classic, and has inspired various TV Shows and Films *cough* Stranger Things *cough*. He's made films that are much more suited for the adults like Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List, and he's made films for the younger audience like E.T while still telling a story that meaningful and cinematically wonderful to watch as an audience member. 

David Lynch

This man is a strange one, I mean he make Tim Burton look boring and thats saying something. David Lynch is so weird in his approach to film and storytelling I don't find it weird anymore, I just think 'okay cool' I just love the fact that David Lynch is not only a director he's a Writer, Artist, Musician, Photographer and doesn't just do film work, he's written allot of stuff for TV aswell, like Twin Peaks. The Elephant Man and Blue Velvet are probably my favorite David Lynch films, I don't want to talk too much about it as I wanna save them for a separate review as they deserve it. Most directors usually turn up there nose at doing TV but thats what I love about David Lynch he doesn't care, he's such a fantastic storyteller who I adore.

Roberto Benigni

Roberto Benigni is a director I never really hear people talk about, and it annoys me as he is so underrated. He is an Italian Director who won an Oscar for Life is Beautiful in 1998 which was in the Foreign Films Category a Category that noone really care about. He made what I think the best Pinocchio ever, he is in some ways like an Italian Kenneth Branagh he directs his films, but at the same time is in them. I also love his personality in interviews, it shows that great directors and filmmakers in my opinion don't just come from the U.K and the U.S.A, they come from all different walks of life. 

Ridley Scott

I've spoken about this filmmaker a few times on here, I feel personally he is the King of Sc-Fi in my opinion anyway. As he did Alien a film thats just iconic, and brilliant, but also the beginning of modern Sc-Fi. He is amazing at storytelling, and devising in different genres such as Thelma and Louise, Robin Hood, and G.I Jane who are all so different from each other. He is a director that that people have preferences over like some people prefer his Sc-Fi work than his Fantasy or more Period Drama/Action, and I think its great that he can play with different genres and can be amazing at it. I love him in Actor's Roundtable on Youtube, as well. 

Kathryn Bigelow

Got to include this legendary lady in the mix, perhaps one of the most important Directors ever she is the first female director to win an Oscar, and for a War film The Hurt Locker. A film that's very serious and not fun in the slightest, but oh god its an amazing film. Not to say women can't direct serious War films, but as a woman who adores films its a stereotype that pops up quite alot, with women who love films, and women who make films just do Chick Flicks and Rom-Coms, which some women do like and thats fine each to there own, but its nice to see variety in filmmaking. Again I will do a post on Women in FIlm, but anyway Kathryn Bigelow is fantastic and not a one trick pony in making films of different genres and experimenting with stories. 

Review: Donnie Darko

Its a gonna be a Sc-Fi week this time, as well why not. I thought I'd start with the Cult Classic Donnie Darko, as thats a Sc-Fi but also its a teen film aswell so thats a nice sub-genre to have.

It takes place in the 1980s, Virginia where a teenager called Donnie Darko played by Jake Gyllenhal who is very troubled. Suddenly when he's in bed at night he is led by a figure who calls himself Frank who tells Donnie that the world with end in 28 days. In the morning he comes home to find a jet engine crashed into his room his sister Elizabeth played by Maggie Gyllenhaal who is his sister in real life tells him no one knows how it happen.

After the incident that occurred to Donnie he is then, stalked by Frank throughout the film. He begins to start a romance towards a new girl in his class called Gretchen who has changed her identity form her previous town. Donnie's teacher is Karen Pomeroy who is played by Drew Barrymore, and is very relaxed, her attitude is annoyed by some of the teachers. From what Donnie's experience at the beginning of the film his attitude is changed, and it affects everyone in the film. Patrick Swayze is in it as the motivational speaker who in some ways was the comic relief of the film

I love how complicated this film was, and I was impressed by Jake's performance as a troubled teenger with something else to be bothered by, as if being a teenager wasn't hard enough, throw in a thing called Frank who stalks him and talks to him and only him. If you thought that Inception was confusing and just a giant mind fuck then watch this, because oh god it goes from one end to the other. The cameo of a young Seth Rogan is seen aswell, and that's something I loved to watch.

The dialogue is brilliant and so clever, every line is said so brilliantly. I love all the extras in the background just as much as I liked Donnie, as its so naturalistic and effortless. I know that some people might think that extras don't do anything because they're not centre stage, but I love scenes where in a classroom and one person's talking and it could be something so boring, and the shot where everyone is just watching them. Its something that I love to notice in films and TV, its nice to see what they're doing or facial expressions they're doing. 

                                                         
However I thought Gretchen was a bit wet, but in some ways I can understand it as with two romantic people, and one is a strong character that's Donnie who is very strong with he as a character and we get him, with who he is. Whereas with Gretchen she is a bit lackluster if that makes sense, I just didn't really get her as a character. Overall I did enjoy this film, and I would watch it again, not my favorite but that's fine. I liked the Sc-Fi part of it being psychological, and the other part is very Coming Of Age based, and I like films that do that where all sorts of things happen in one go.

Frank was a character that I love alot, as he is a very rare character that I don't see often with films. I love the silent treatment he gave Donnie, as it wasn't as if Frank wanted him to die or was torturing him in a way. But it was the sudden voices of Frank in his head, similar to a mental illness in a way, and thats what I loved about that. It can get quite angsty in some places of the film, but that is expected from the teenager aspect of the film. 

I adore this film, and the unique elements of the film from the styling to the fascinating script. The mix of teenagers and sc-fi was the perfect amount for the film, and what it is meant to say. Definitely give this film a watch as you won't regret it, or find anything else quite like it again.

Peppermint Friday Review #11: Doctor Strange

I felt that a superhero film was a long time coming, so we all know what this week will be about.

Doctor Strange was created by Marvel and Stan Lee, and this film is the origin story of the character, staring Benedict Cumberbatch. Its about a man called Doctor Stephen Strange who is a Doctor of medicine who ends up being in a car crash and losing the use of his hands. But he is determined he can heal his hands, he then goes into experimental surgeries, to put it short he became this supernatural human.

Doctor Strange then begins to learn his craft from his tutor called the Ancient One who is played by Tilda Swinton. Who is amazing, as originally the character of the Ancient One played by a man, but she does it so well, I can honestly say only she could of done it. I love Tilda Swinton anyway but she is amazing, I was scared of her as the white witch and loved her wise willowyness she bought to the character. Rachel McAdams plays Doctor Strange's ex girlfriend which was interesting for me, as it felt like Doctor Strange lived and just found the answers for him, which is also why I like him.

                               

I loved the beginning of the character, as this is a character that I knew nothing of before. I never read any of the comics, or watch TV Shows that this character was in. So for me this film and Doctor Strange was totally fresh to me, which is good as theres no pre-judgement I guess. What I really loved about this character was that he seemed abit of an Anti-Hero, because he is obliviously very clever and intelligent and he reminds me of a really clever guy who has all the questions but frustrated because he doesn't know the answer and that annoys him. That sounds horrible, but this is the beginning of Doctor Strange so he can be flawed which makes me like him as it makes him more of a human, because I guess when something happens to you and you don't know whats going on, you would get abit frustrated.

Benedict Cumberbatch is a fantastic man already, I think we all know that. He is brilliant in this films, and I think I love him even more after this film, and I know that there going to do a sequel and Benedict will be in it. I watch Benedict and I'm assuming we all know him as Sherlock, and Alan Turing, and just intelligent British people. So its nice to see him as an American, but still playing a clever man and looking completely different, like his little beardy thing still looks good, not many men can pull it off. 

This film is amazing, I just find so different and good. I have also found a new favorite hero, maybe its the magic but I love him he is amazing, I can't wait to see the sequels which I'm assuming this isn't the last we'll see of this character. So this week will be about Comicbook Heros! I will be talking about my favorite Comic Book heros/heroines, just everything I like about the Comic Book world.
